6 Best Spring Perfumes

Scents can be an instant mood lifter.  After a gloomy winter, Washington, D.C. just had the Cherry Blossom bloom a little early this year.  Hyacinths, daffodils, tulips, and jasmine are in bloom now, next month will be the lilacs and wisteria. Yes I know the whole schedule because I love going out to look at all of them. With a new season, comes a fresh perfume rotation. You automatically look good when you smell good. The only time anyone will complain about your perfume is if you spray too much. "Ladies a man will never remember your handbag, but will always remember your perfume." Oliver Creed (perfumer)

For the spring, the types of fragrances I like are fresh scents and photorealistic flowers; I'm a white flower-holic. Smelling my perfumes uplifts my spirits, thus these fragrances make me happy. When shopping for fragrances I always say, quality over quantity. Save your money to get a good fragrance that you're going to love rather than a bunch of affordable ones that you feel meh about and need to layer with other fragrances to like. A person's fragrance "wardrobe" should include more than just designer perfumes, hence my list consists of only niche fragrances.

People associate memories with scents so having a signature scent is always nice. Having that beautiful smell about you instantly is very inviting to other people that are around you.  Definitely look for something that reflects you as a person. Finding a great scent is going to make you more attractive.
I've been wanting to get into my spring fragrances since the middle of winter, as we could use a little pick me up while we wait for summer. So I'm excited to start a new fragrance rotation for spring. Here are my spring perfume picks.

My perfume tray for March, April and May.

Aerin - Mediterranean Honeysuckle
My favorite from this list because I have a scent memory from my childhood of smelling honeysuckle bushes. The perfume is a blend of citruses with the lovely sweet nectar of honeysuckle, perfect to wear on your Mediterranean vacation. It has notes of bergamot, grapefruit, honeysuckle, tuberose, honey and jasmine.  I know it's hard to buy perfume online, so get the mini size from Sephora. It's a great size to travel with! You'll get so many compliments on it.  Granddaughter of Estee Lauder, Aerin makes the most beautiful realistic floral scent perfumes.

Van Cleef & Arpels - Gardenia Petale
One of those love at first sniff fragrances, a beautiful feminine fragrance that you'll want to have in your collection. It's a buttery white floral with a very realistic, creamy, milky gardenia scent. It's very classy, delicate and sits close to the skin. Notes are Gardenia, White Flowers, Jasmine, Green Notes, Lily-of-the-Valley, and Citruses. You can purchase a sample here. Van Cleef is French luxury jewelry company founded in 1896 and makes the famous Alhambra bracelet.

Diptyque - Philosykos
This is a green fragrance for when you don't want to smell sweet or floral. It's a woody fig scent with an opening that reminds me of wet grass after the rain. It has some creaminess from the coconut and the dry down is sandalwood. Overall it's a hyperrealist fig scent. While this has an iconic status in the fragrance world for being so unique, I would not recommend blind buy this one. The perfume comes in two versions: Eau de Parfum & Eau de Toilette and a body lotion and soap. I also love fig scented candles. Diptyque has 5 stores in NYC (because people love their candles) and 14 other stores across the United States. You can purchase a sample here.

Etat Libre D'Orange - You or Someone Like You
This is the newest member of my perfume family and a very fresh mint scent.  Picture a fresh grassy  scent of mint leaves, squeezed limes and fragrant tomato leaves. It's crisp and so refreshing, you'll smell very clean. Notes are Mint, Grapefruit, Bergamot, Green Notes, Cassis, Rose and White Musk. It unisex and stays close to the skin. This smells a little similar to another favorite of mine Jo Malone - Blackberry & Bay  which is a much stronger/herbal green scent so I'm enjoying the lighter Etat scent. You can purchase Etat samples from their website.

Byredo - Inflorescence
This is a cold, green scent with endless screeching florals pushing through. Picture dewy florals and the freshness of spring in a bottle. It's a very realistic lily of the valley, you know those tiny bell shaped blossoms. I think it's similar to Gucci Bloom but Gucci (which stays on your skin for 24 hours) smells more perfumey while Byredo smells like your nose is in an actual jasmine bush, hence the difference in price. There's a dupe for it, but I haven't tried it so I can't speak to how similar it is. Byredo is a Swedish candle and perfume brand founded in 2006 and has a store in NYC and is located in Neiman Marcus counters across the country. You can purchase a sample here. The brand makes a lot of beautiful perfumes so I'd recommend trying out other scents as well.

Jacques Fath - Lilas Exquis

Note the juice isn't purple in person. Notes are Hyacinth, Blueberry, Lily,  Lilac, Violet and Magnolia. It's a floral woody musk that smells like the color purple. It's an impressive realistic lilac scent that stays close to the skin.

How to make your perfume last longer

Before you put on your favorite scent, you're going to want to put on a moisturizer on first.  Perfumes have been shown to have a longer lasting affect when they are applied to moisturized skin.  If you have a body lotion that is the same scent as the perfume you are wearing that is going to last even longer because you're laying the scents.   Here are a few scented lotions that I like: MagnoliaAmberAlmond, Honeysuckle.

Another option is to use a perfume primer like D.S. & Durga or Hermetica and wear it underneath your perfume. Then obviously the more sprays you do, the more likely someone will smell you. You can also spray your hair and clothes which will hold the perfume longer than your skin. Never rub your wrists together after applying perfume, it rubs off the top notes. Now that we're wearing short sleeve shirts, you can also spray perfume inside of your elbows.

Don't store your perfume in the bathroom as it's going to shorten its lifespan because of the frequent changes in temperature and humidity.

For Men

I have one pick for men for a spring fragrance - Tom Ford - Beau de Jour. Again, I think fragrances are a great way to leave a lasting impression, people will take note and remember a great smelling guy. It's an easy way to stand out. Beau De Jour (Fine Day) is an absolute classic, and is a rebottled 2020 new edition. It's an Aromatic Fougere (fern-like) fragrance for men and this scent is what men used to wear in the 70s and 80s. It has a nostalgic and vintage old school feel yet still modern, as Tom Ford is always cutting edge. You'll smell like your dad but it's classic and refined and not outdated. It’s a nice evocative of a different era, its a barbershop scent. The notes are Lavender, Rosemary, Oakmoss, Mint, Basil, Geranium, Patchouli and Amber. It's a perfect spring fragrance and I recommend this for men over 35 who dress nice during the day.
