Sweat-Proof Your Style: A Guide to Functional and Fashionable Gym Wear

My go to fitness look is a tank top and leggings. My personal preference is to not wear the matching bra and leggings sets, and thankfully that saves me on a lot of  overspending on gym clothes. Since I just joined a new gym I've been on a mission lately to find some new workout clothes that are both cute and sweat proof. I've done a lot of online ordering and returning! I've tried out some new to me brands and but still like my tried and true brands. I have a mid-size figure and wanted to find that perfect workout outfit that keeps me comfy during those sweaty sessions at the gym. If your activewear is the same style as mine, I got you covered as I'm going to share my favorite tanks, leggings, socks, bras and water bottle.

My main goal was to find something that was both stylish and functional. When it comes to what colors I wear to the gym, I stick to muted/dusty purples, mint/sage, white and black tanks, black shorts for summer, and then I have a rule no boring black leggings. All my black leggings have some shimmer pattern on them. I always look at fabric composition when I buy tanks, I don't want a tank that will show sweat stains. There's a lot of new fitness apparel brands out there but I find their sizing to be small and that's not good for my mental health so I stick to buying all my leggings from the big box stores.

Don't be scared of the returns! In fact I bought a printer in 2020 for the sole purpose of returns! I do all my shopping online and have no problems doing returns. Stores don't have exchange policies anymore, but I return and buy again in the size/color that works better for me.  But you have to do this immediately when you get something in the mail, if you wait too long, you miss the return window.  You're going to wear your workout clothes every week so you need to like it, it needs to be perfect or else you won't reach for it! Hence I return if I don't like the color in person, the sizing is off, the fit is weird, it's sheer, etc. I don't abuse the returns process but I try to make sure I get the perfect gear.

I've been a lululemon stan for 14 years! Nike is my second favorite store.

Leggings

Lululemon Align leggings are my favorite leggings of all time! The ones I wear today I've had for 6 years and they still are in great shape! I wouldn't wear them for running, but any other activity at the gym they are perfect. That's because that Aligns have zero compression at the waist so if you want them to stay up you need to size down 1-2 sizes.

They don't have sales but there's section on their website under Women called "We Made Too Much" that they have discounted products that you can't return. It used to be slim pickings but now lots of stuff is moved to that section. I saw an influencer say she got a dupe of Align leggings from amazon, I ordered them, the fabric is not the same, they just made the seams look the same. I like mine align leggings to be the 23" cropped length but everyone has their preference on length. The pockets costs extra and I don't have anything to put in my pockets so I only got the align shorts with pockets.

People complain about lulu prices, but you are paying for the quality of the fabric. I had a lulu bra clip break a year after I bought it so I brought it into the store to ask if they had the same model because I didn't know the name so I could buy it again, they offered me a free exchange, I was shocked! All my lulu leggings I always hang to dry.

If you like a color on lulu's website you can search by color in their search box, why don't all stores use that feature?  Above is the palm court color which I got. Lululemon has so many unique colors and constant new color drops! That's what I like so much about them! Old Navy, Target, have the same basic, primary colors. You can image google and find people's lulu align leggings collections they've acquired over the years to see color comparison.  Often when I get a new pair in the mail I think wait don't I already have this color, but nope they are different but in my head they are similar dusty purples. Here is my lulu align leggings collection, the black and brown are a shine fabric called Radiate Foil Print Black. I recently bought a pair in butter yellow that I forgot to include in this photo.

Like I was explaining all my black leggings have some kind of foil to them.

How I store my leggings in my dresser drawer, Marie Kondo style.

Nike did make a pant that has a similar fabric though that has two different styles: Medium-Support High-Waisted and  Gentle-Support High-Waisted. I got the mauve color which has a raw edge. Nike has free shipping and returns so shopping is hassle free and so fast! I get all my orders the next day, it's wild! My returns they process within a week.

Under Armour  Gloss Printed Ankle Leggings have this pretty glossy leopard print to them! I have them pictured above.

Tanks

For tanks I want a loose tank that is not fitted skimming my abs. And I don't want a cropped length. I Also I want full back coverage to hide my sports bra, but I don't need it to cover my butt. I want a fabric that does not show sweat stains. Thus I don't want an all cotton tank or this specific mix - 89% polyester/11% spandex. I also want interesting colors, not the standard boring primary colors or drab dark neutrals. This requirements is seemly hard to find. Athleta and Lululemon tanks don't hit all of my requirements. I've tried buying cheaper tanks from amazon but the quality of the fabric is cheap. I keep my workout clothes for years so they need to hold up a long time in the wash.

Vuori Energy Top Long  This has become my favorite workout top that I reach for. Super flattering and moisture wicking. The fabric  is so special because it feels like silk! The fabric is 96% Polyester, 4% Elastane and can be thrown in the dryer. The top comes in two lengths. I got the Pistachio and Hazel colors. The store has excellent customer service (I emailed a couple times) and a discount for first time customers.

Rhone Serene Tank I got in blue lavender.  It's not cropped but its not long and it's slightly longer in the back. Fabric is Nylon and Spandex and feels butter soft. Can be thrown in dryer.

Calia Renew Tank This has tiny holes throughout the shirt to keep you cool like a vented material. The fabric has a rougher feel to it and is 91% Nylon & 9% Spandex. Dicks Sporting Goods has a 90-day return policy!

Nike Dri-Fit I have this in a ton of colors as this has been my go to over the years but don't like this season's color offerings.

Gymshark Vital Seamless 2.0 Light Tank ticks all the boxes and is made of 100% nylon. Their other tanks have large arm holes and a disclaimer that they aren't "designed for heavy lifting or high-intensity training." They seem to be sold out most of their small selection of colors.

Beyond Yoga Featherweight Rebalance Tank comes in a ton of colors and is made from 94% Polyester, 6% Spandex. A high neck, super soft fabric, a relaxed fit yet funny enough I don't like this style for yoga because it's much wider than the Vuori top so it's great to hide the tummy while standing but this tent style in downward dog has you are flashing everyone. It comes in loads of colors and sizing available. I have it in three colors including this Periwinkle Cloud Heather and want more! These tanks can go in the dryer when so many of my activewear can not.  It's always free shipping and returns! First time customers get a discount.

For a long sleeve, loose shirt to wear to and from the gym in the fall I like this one.

Socks

I'm really particular about my socks and I never lose a pair but you could use a special laundry bag to keep all your socks. I have a sock organizer in my dresser drawer so I can easily find them. Yes I bought the socks in the neon yellow color.

Feetures Elite Ultra Light No Show Tab

These are engineered with anatomical design and targeted compression that they claim protects by eliminating blisters. It takes up minimal room inside shoes, in fact if I hold this up next to the Swiftwick it's half the size. It's the thinnest cushion option that provides a lighter, cooler feel. It has no toe seam and no show tab height that sits below the ankle. The fabric is 95% Nylon 5% Spandex.

Swiftwick Aspire Zero Tab

This is slightly thicker than Feetures but still a thin sock and designed for cycling so I initially bought this for the peloton. It is engineered with firm compression that supports every contour of the foot to reduce fatigue during endurance activities. Zero cuff height sits below the ankle. The fabric is 55% Nylon / 40% Olefin / 5% Spandex.

Undergarments

As a C cup I have yet to find a high support bra in my lifetime so far. Here are some medium support bras that I wear.

DSG Women's Do It All High Support Sports Bra

Lululemon Energy Bra High Support, B–DDD Cups

Skims Naked Bikini  I stocked up during their annual sale for $11.20 and got my nude in Sienna and Onyx to wear with my black leggings. Sometimes I see women lean over at the gym in black leggings and their leggings end up being semi sheer so I figured some black panties could help prevent this.  These raw-cut edge bikini completely disappear under tight gym leggings so you don't have to wear thongs! It has a cotton-lined gusset.

Water Bottle

I did a lot of research on what was popular and trending. My most important considerations was size: needed to be bigger than 17oz so I have enough water for an entire hour long class. Needed to be stainless steel so my water stays ice cold. Needed to be a cool color. Should not be a straw top, there seems to be mixed opinions on whether using a straw everyday makes you end up with smokers lips? Either way straw bottles are harder to clean and I didn't want to end up in the hospital because I didn't keep up with cleaning my bottle from mold properly. I got the Corkcicle Canteen in Dragonfly, a jewel-toned hue, with moody, iridescent highlights that shift under different light. This picture does not do it justice!
