5 Best Plum Lipsticks for Fall

Purple is my favorite color but I never in a million years thought to wear it as a lipstick shade. Last year on the show Shark Tank a woman was trying to sell bold unique colored lipsticks and one of the judges said to her "if those colors lipstick actually sold, it would already be on shelves in stores, the big companies would have dedicated shelf space to it already." Lately, I've seen quite a few celebrities wearing purple lipstick on the red carpet and they pull it off! It looks super sexy, edgy and chic.

If you're intimidated by the idea of purple lipstick  people, have no fear, there are so many different shades of purple that range from cool lavenders, to bright plums, and deep eggplant. The most important thing when selecting a purple lipstick is choosing the right shade for your skin tone. I have warm under-toned skin so red-based purple colors  look best on me. After brunch in Georgetown with some friends, I went to Sephora  to see if blonde hair can pull off purple lipstick. I swatched a few shades from Urban Decay's vice line and loved the colors Speedball and the new limited edition Sephora exclusive color Troublemaker (pictured left). Speaking of UD Vice lipstick, it has such a cult following that they released 30 of their colors in one kit for $325! This spring UD gave 100 lipstick stockpile kits to a number of youtubers and after spent 30 min of my life watching one there's so many more colors I need now! lol

Then I tried on Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in the color Train Bleu. Initially, I thought it was a bit too vampy looking for me, but in retrospect, I think the oxblood color looks chic. The concept is its a lipstick combined with a pencil in a jumbo crayon. I personally found it a bit drying and didn't find application as smoothe and it made my lips look chapped. If you want a cheaper alternative to try out purple lipstick, check out Colourpop lip glosses that retail for only $6!

I've always loved doing bold eyeshadow looks so I mostly wear nude lipstick.  Because you don't want to have a clown face doing bold colors everywhere. The reverse is true for a bold lip. If you decide to wear a bold purple on your lips, you need to keep your eyes natural looking or a smokey eye.

Not sure what color to get, check out Sephora's Give Me Some Bold Lip kit which contains 6 lipsticks in bold colors. The kit is $38 and includes a full-size Laura Mercier Velour Lovers Lipstick in the shade An Affair which retails for $28. The kit is a great way to try different products.

Purple lips look beautiful on all skin tones and there is a shade of purple for you!  So, are you going to try out this vivid color?
