The Ultimate Guide to the Best Cooling Pillows

I’ve bought seven pillows in the last couple of years, and finding the right one is harder than it seems. As a stomach sleeper, I need a low loft, around 3-4 inches, to keep my head, neck, and shoulders aligned. Anything higher leaves me waking up stiff and uncomfortable.

Switching to a cooling pillow also made a big difference. Cold pillows draw heat away from your head, helping your body cool down and fall asleep faster. The cooling sensation feels refreshing, reduces tossing and turning, and keeps you comfortable all night. I also avoid buying from Amazon since returns can mean getting a used pillow. Brands usually have clearer return policies, which matters when you’re putting your face on it every night.

If you’re tired of guessing, this guide covers everything I’ve learned from trying all seven pillows.

Cozy Earth Silk Pillow ✅

Filled with 100% long-strand mulberry silk and shelled with premium bamboo viscose, helping you maintain a steady and comfortable temperature throughout the night. They use AI to answer emails so don't bother emailing them a question, you will get an obvious stock response. The brand also sells sheets and pajamas which I've bought from them. You get a 100 Day Trial. I paid $156 with a coupon, but regular price is $200.

Silk pillows are a hypoallergenic, breathable, and soft alternative to down fillings. Silk naturally provides a cooler, lighter sleep experience. I was shocked with this pillow, not only does it stay cool it really does mimic down.

Infused with cooling gel and designed with an innovative grid structure, this pillow claims to dissipate heat keeping you cool. Inside is adaptive memory foam. 30 day return on all pillows. Cost is $140 and  smallest size is queen size.

I purchased the low loft size and the blue diamond pattern is the pillow case. The blue cooling foam is only on one side of the pillow and it feels a little cool to the touch. But of course I have to put my own silk pillowcase on top and then I don't feel any coolness.  And in the night when you're sleeping how are you supposed to know what side of the pillow has the cooling gel? The actual pillow is hard as a rock and made of a material that traps heat. So I got no cooling affect from the pillow and returned the pillow which they made easy to do.

A plush, adjustable, cool pillow filled with Kapok fibers and shredded memory foam. Kapok fibers are harvested from the seeds of the kapok tree because it’s natural and harvested responsibly. Kapok trees are grown in SE Asia and makes a cotton like fluff.

The pillow is super light and airy and gives you a high-end down-like feel. It is overstuffed as it has an adjustable loft but to be honest I'm not trying to unzip my pillow and adjust how its filled.  Smallest size is a queen. I paid $109 during their Black Friday sale but now it's $171 and easy returns.

I grew up always sleeping on a down pillow as I was frustrated with all the alternative material pillows I tried. This Canadian Duck Down smelled like a dead bird! I've never had this experience before with down pillows. I had to let it sit by an open window for a few days to air out. Eventually this pillow just didn't do it for me either in the way it felt. Also down will always be hot. I initially bought the Soft pillow but exchanged for the Medium pillow which surprised me being a stomach sleeper. Cost is $139 and can be returned within 365 days.

This is a plush, hotel-quality latex pillow that comes in two loft options. The high loft is designed for side sleepers who want a fuller, more cushioned feel, while the lower loft works better for back and stomach sleepers.

The construction is a bit different from a standard pillow. It’s essentially two pillows in one, with an inner core made of shredded natural latex and an outer layer filled with down-alternative microdenier fibers. The outer layer gives it that soft, fluffy feel similar to a goose down hotel pillow, although it does need regular fluffing to keep that shape and loft.

The latex core provides structure and support while also being naturally hypoallergenic. It helps inhibit dust mites and other allergens, which makes it a good option if you have indoor allergies. The brand also says the latex has been cleaned to remove proteins that can trigger latex allergies. Another benefit is breathability, since natural latex allows for good airflow and helps keep you cooler throughout the night.

It comes with an organic cotton cover that you can wash, but the pillow itself isn’t washable. The brand offers a 45-night sleep trial and claims the pillow should last about three years. The price is $165.

I really liked this pillow for the first five months. It did a great job mimicking the feel of goose down while still offering some support. Over time, though, it stopped working for me and didn’t maintain the same level of comfort. I might be open to trying this again if they improve the model.

Tempurpedic Cloud Dual Cooling Pillow
They added cooling gel to both sides of the pillow that help absorb excess heat. This pillow is medium firm and heavy at 5 lbs but stays cool to the touch all night long. The inside is memory foam. The pillow is not returnable. Cost is $150 but they often have buy 1 get 1 free deals. I rate it ok for cooling; but no for this hard as a rock weight.

Hypoallergenic, non-toxic blend of cross-cut memory foam and microfiber. You can build your perfect alignment by adding or removing fill based on your sleep position, which again I don't have time for. Cost is $89. I gave this to my mother as it was too big for me but she didn't like it either as a down purist.

I have been wanting to try the Purple Pillow but I don't want to spend $200 on a pillow. And I'm afraid that since I sleep on my tummy I will wake up with a honeycomb grid mark on my face.

Remember pillows are supposed to be changed every 1-2 years! Feather down can last much longer since you can wash it.  I'm allergic to dust mites so I take this rule very seriously. source

I bought a blissy pillowcase  but then found this Amazon one that is exactly the same. Prior to buying these two, for years I used a satin pillowcase and I can tell you they feel exactly the same! The only difference is silk pillowcases wrinkle a ton and should be air dried!

I really like the Lunya sleep mask! It's made from silk and stuffed with polyester. I appreciate that it comes in two sizes as we all don't have the same head size.
