Oura Ring Alternative: How RingConn Changed My Sleep

For a long time, I treated sleep like something I was already doing "well enough." I worked out, ate well, and spent eight hours in bed every night, yet I still felt tired, foggy, and constantly hungry. It wasn’t until I started measuring what was actually happening that things began to change. Buying less and buying better has always been my philosophy, and investing in my health has had the biggest compounding return of anything I’ve spent money on to rejuvenate. Better sleep, lower stress, more focus, more energy. This is the kind of foundation that makes every part of life easier. Using RingConn helped me understand my wellness baseline and start making smarter, day to day decisions that actually stick.

If you’re familiar with the Oura Ring, RingConn is a more affordable alternative, but it’s also one of the only alternatives left. In 2025, there were several cheaper smart rings on the market. Oura sued all of them for copyright infringement. RingConn is still around because they agreed to a licensing deal that allows them to continue selling in the US. The ring ships from Hong Kong and when I emailed customer service about a suggestion, I didn't an auto AI response which a lot of companies are doing these days. I got a real human who explained that they can't make the layout update I suggested because they have a lot of non-English users.

I wanted a gold ring, but the Oura Ring 4 costs $500! And it’s not actually gold! It’s titanium, which made the price hard for me to justify, especially when their other colors are $350. (My friend bought a gold cover for her oura ring.) By the way I saw a tiktok of a woman who had some issue with her finger swelling with the oura ring on to the point she couldn't take the ring off, she went to the emergency room and they said they can't cut it off because it's titanium.

RingConn normally costs around $300, but I paid $200 on Black Friday and used my FSA dollars. Another major difference is that Oura requires a monthly subscription, while RingConn does not. This year they are coming out with a new version that also tracks your blood pressure. They have a trade in program where they will give you $90 for an old RingConn or $60 for an Oura ring.

Before buying, I watched a lot of comparison videos from people who bought both rings and wore them at the same time. Most found the data to be comparable. Both track sleep, heart rate, HRV, activity, body temperature trends (early fever detection), and recovery (takes all the data and tells you how ready your body is to take on the day). Where they differ is in how that information is presented. RingConn focuses on solid sleep and recovery basics with simple readiness style scores and less interpretation than the Oura app. You get more raw data and fewer explanations, which I actually prefer.

Below is my sleep score. It was interesting to see that it takes me an hour to fall asleep  even though I thought I fell asleep easily. I was surprised by how often I'm awake during the night even though I never wake up to use the bathroom, so I thought I was sleeping continuously. RingConn has helped me build better habits around sleep.  Good sleep isn’t a luxury. It’s foundational. Your best morning really does start the night before.

I've heard Oura ring owners say theirs are faulty and they had to keep returning for a replacement. I will say that I don't use the RingConn for tracking my steps as it completely over aggerates my step count. If you wear the ring continuously it automatically tracks nighttime skin temperature for cycle insights and alerts you to significant daytime shifts. Daytime temperature spikes can trigger alerts for stress, fatigue, or panic attacks, helping you notice changes. RingConn alerts focus on health anomalies like unusual heart rate, skin temperature changes, and blood oxygen dips, acting as an early warning system for potential issues like fever, inflammation, or dehydration. It can detect dropping oxygen levels during a severe respiratory infection. RingConn offers a sedentary alert feature that sends phone notifications to remind you to move if you've been inactive (sitting/lying) for about 50 minutes. I get those when I'm in the zone reading a book. It's a good reminder to stand up if you have a desk job.

The hardware itself has some real advantages too. RingConn is slimmer in width and lower profile on the finger than Oura. It feels more like a traditional ring, which I appreciated since I don’t like bulky wearables. It’s also lighter, which makes it easier to wear all day and overnight. I barely feel it. A lot of people say they forget they’re even wearing it, and that’s been true for me.

When you buy the RingConn, you don’t have to pick a size right away. You can choose the sizing kit option and they’ll send you plastic rings to wear for 24 hours so you can figure out which finger you want to wear it on and what size feels most comfortable. I’m right handed and wear mine on my left middle finger. I’ve seen TikToks of people saying the ring irritated their finger when worn 24/7, so I switch fingers before going to bed and again when I wake up. That small change has worked well for me.

The ring stays charged for about 10 days before it needs to go back on the charger  (longer than the oura ring) and it takes roughly one hour to fully charge. You will get a notification when the battery is low. You can shower and swim with it on, but I usually take it off to shower and put on skincare. One time I forgot to put it back on and didn’t notice for about five hours. That’s when I learned the app has a find my ring feature. As you walk around your home, the app alerts you when you’re getting close, which made it easy to track down without panicking.

What surprised me most was how quickly the insights started influencing my behavior. The biggest shift has been sleep. The sleep insights alone have genuinely changed my life. Instead of guessing why I felt tired or wired, I could actually see what was happening with my sleep stages, consistency, and recovery. That visibility kicked off a real sleep hygiene journey for me.

I used to have a FitBit that I used to track my sleep and thought what's the point of it telling me I had a bad night when I already know? So when I saw everyone wearing OuraRings I was skeptical about it, but now I am addicted. I check the app every single morning to get an idea of my sleep score.

One of the most helpful insights about the RingConn was learning my sleep chronotype - dolphin. I realized that early morning workouts is ideal because it gives me more energy for the rest of the day. Once I realized that, I became more consistent with my winter morning workouts.

If there’s one takeaway from all of this, it’s not to underestimate the value of good sleep. When you improve your sleep, everything else gets easier. I’m excited to keep refining my routine and seeing even better sleep over time, and RingConn has been a powerful part of that process.
