Truvani Plant Based Protein Powder

Part of my weight loss plan was to increase my protein macros. I read that if you're lifting weights you want to eat a certain amount of protein to preserve your muscle mass so you don't slow down your metabolic rate plus eating protein throughout the day makes weight loss easier because it helps with hunger and  fullness aka managing your appetite. I did not replace any meals with a protein shake, but I thought since lifting heavy weights 5x a week is such an intrical part of my workout regime it would be good to add a protein shake as a snack. I don't drink it daily, but a few times a week and it tastes really good. It was important for me to find a plant based protein powder that has clean ingredients. Truvani only has 6 ingredients in their protein powders! Just be aware that shipping is very slow and their marketing practices can be annoying.

I started off with their sampler pack for $20, but you can find coupons online for even cheaper. It includes 7 single serve packs in Chocolate, Vanilla, Banana Cinnamon, Peanut Butter, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Vanilla Chai and Unflavored.

I found the unflavored and vanilla chalky even when I added fruit to it. My favorite were the peanut butter, chocolate and chocolate peanut butter. I don't recall them tasting distinctively different from each other, but I did drink them on different days. The three flavors were smooth and delicious!

Since I love matcha, I ended up ordering a bag of that. The Matcha bag is 20 servings for $60. It has 20-27 mg of caffeine per serving while a cup of coffee has  95 mg. Now matcha is an acquired taste, so if you don't like matcha stick with a safer flavor. You can find their vanilla and chocolate flavors sold at Whole Foods. These are all the ingredients in the matcha protein powder:

A fruit smoothie without fats and protein for breakfast is the same as sugary cereal for breakfast so it's good to add protein to your smoothies. You can also add protein powder to oatmeal and your overnight oats.

How I Make My Protein Shakes

The base ingredients for all my smoothies is 8oz unsweetened almond milk. I was drinking oat milk for awhile because it's so much creamier, then I read some negative views of oat milk but I haven't done enough research to see if those are legitimate claims, but in the meantime I switched back to almond milk but I make sure I buy the refrigerated kind as it has less additives. The top two healthiest almond milks with the least ingredients are Three Trees  and Malk  because it has no gums, oils, fillers or anything artificial.  But when I can't get to Whole Foods I buy Califia Farms.  Almond breeze is too watery and has a lot of other ingredients. Not to be confused with Silk Almond milk as they both have the same blue labels.

I don't have a shake everyday, but I do find them delicious and sometimes easier to make then figuring out what to eat for a snack. And they give me a lot of energy for my afternoon energy slump. These are the recipes I have been making with the powder. I don't like bananas in my smoothies, I can taste it in my smoothie and feel it ruins the whole smoothie. So what I do is buy bananas, let them ripe on the counter, then cut them into fourths and freeze the pieces in a Stasherbag. I will only put 1/4 of a banana in my smoothie. The frozen banana just adds more texture, sweetness to the smoothie and some vitamins. I don't add ice to my smoothie because I feel that just waters it down. I do add 4oz of greek yogurt to thicken the smoothie and that adds even more protein. I buy frozen fruit for my smoothies because it's cheaper. Frozen fruit is picked at peak ripeness and retains its nutritional value frozen.

I don't recommend buying Truvani's Ceramic Container because it does not hold a whole bag of protein powder and its very easy for the lid to not seal completely. They did send me free samples of their protein bars and they were delicious and I will purchase with my next order.

I don't have any tall clear drinking glasses, but once I mix the other ingredients in, the matcha isn't as bright green, but it looks like a milkshake.
