How to Style a Nightstand

Your nightstand might seem like a small piece of furniture, but styling it thoughtfully can completely transform the feel of your bedroom. Create a space that gets you excited about crawling into bed at night and makes you feel delighted when you wake up in the morning. By layering practical items with personal touches, varying heights and textures, and adding elements like art, books, and greenery, you can make your nightstand feel super chic, sophisticated, and beautiful. It’s the last thing you see as you go to bed and the first thing you notice when you wake up. These small details really make your house feel cozy, warm, and lived-in, giving your bedroom a polished, inviting vibe every day. Your nightstands don't have to be matchy matchy, that is so dated and has no personality. Here are my steps to styling your nightstand.
Getting the size and proportions of your nightstand right makes a huge difference in how your bedroom feels. A nightstand that’s too big can crowd the room, while one that’s too small looks out of place and isn’t very practical. Aim for a width that matches the scale of your bed and a height close to the top of your mattress for both comfort and balance. Nightstands don’t have to match perfectly; mixing styles can add personality as long as they feel cohesive. This is my nightstand with a purple glass lamp, three books and orchids.

1. Start with function
Before adding anything, clear off the surface and think about what you actually use your nightstand for. Keep only what you need at arm’s reach, an alarm clock, a lamp, book, phone, or rings. (I don't sleep with my phone on my nightstand.) This keeps things practical and avoids clutter from the start. Less is more. Store stuff away because it will instantly make your space feel more luxurious because all the quality pieces will stand out a lot more.

2. Choose the right lamp
A lamp anchors the setup and provides balance. Pick one that gives off enough light for reading and is proportionate to your bed and nightstand.  Choose a tall lamp for your nightstand as it should almost be as tall as your headboard. Lighting is key and is what vies you all the ambiance and make the space feel inviting, welcoming and luxurious. In a small bedroom you really need to play up the lighting.

3. Add artwork or something vertical
Use the wall space above or behind the nightstand to add height and depth. You can hang a framed print against the wall, or layer a couple of smaller pieces. It helps the vignette feel complete rather than flat.

4. Stack a few books
Books instantly make a space look more thoughtful and layered. Choose pretty covers or coffee table books, and use them to elevate smaller objects. Please don't use the Tom Ford or Chanel coffee table book. The books in the first image was a photo of my nightstand. I have two travel books and one personal development book.

5. Bring in natural elements
A touch of greenery, a small plant, or flowers adds life and texture. If real plants aren’t practical, use quality faux greenery or a dried bouquet for the same effect. They just boost your mood when you see it. Small little touches make a big difference.

6. Mix textures and finishes
A curated look comes from blending different materials glass, ceramic, metal, wood, and fabric. People talk a lot about color but texture goes a long way to making a space feel more visually inter4esting. Luxury material make the space more luxurious.

7. Vary the heights
Combine tall, medium, and low items so the eye moves naturally across the surface. A lamp, a vase, and a short stack of books work well together without feeling crowded.

8. Use a tray or dish
A tray can instantly make your setup look more intentional. It keeps smaller items like jewelry, lip balm, and rings in a container and this adds another layer of texture or color.

9. Coordinate color
Keep your color palette consistent with the rest of your bedroom. Use light or neutral pieces to brighten dark furniture, or mix in metallics and darker tones for contrast. Consistency helps everything feel cohesive.

10. Add a personal touch
Include something meaningful like a photo, a small keepsake, or a decorative piece that makes you smile. This is what turns a styled surface into something that actually feels like yours.

11. Keep it simple and functional
Don’t overcrowd the space. A few carefully chosen items make more impact than a crowded display. Leave some breathing room and make sure every piece serves a purpose, either functional or decorative.

12. Add finishing details
If you want a final layer, include a  diffuser, or small mirror to reflect light and create a sense of calm.  I prefer not to have candles on my bedside table as I'm afraid one toss of my duvet will hit it and start a fire. Instead I use reed diffusers. These subtle touches bring the space to life without overwhelming it.

On a final note, since it's that time of year, consider transforming your bedroom into a magical winter wonderland, creating an charming retreat that fills you with holiday cheer! Your Christmas decor should not be confined only to the living room.  On top of your  dresser you can add: a garland, bottlebrush Christmas trees, candles, twinkle lights, ornaments and a Christmas village.
